The mission of St. Vincent de Paul Middletown (SVDM) is meeting needs and offering hope. Founded in 1980 by two Sisters of Mercy, SVDM’s original focus was to address the increase in hunger and homelessness that resulted from Connecticut Valley Hospital’s downsizing. The agency’s first programs were a soup kitchen and temporary shelter for the homeless. Through years of serving the most vulnerable populations in the community, SVDM became a thought leader on homelessness and the most effective ways of helping unhoused individuals achieve a more stable life. Understanding hunger and homelessness as a symptom of deeper challenges, SVDM uses its core programs as portals to holistic support, a means of addressing the root cause of an individual’s poverty. Through its innovative wraparound services, SVDM supports clients with addiction challenges and health conditions to create achievable steps towards improved health, recovery, and community connection.
From our founding in 1980, our agency has grown to meet the needs of our friends and neighbors in Middlesex County. In addition to our core Soup Kitchen program, SVDM also now offers a wide spectrum of services that center our clients and prioritize their individual needs, including the Amazing Grace Free Community Market and Supportive Housing services.
