In 1976, Stratford Friends School opened its doors as the country’s first Quaker school for children with learning differences with a mission is to educate our students through a structured, multisensory program that celebrates students’ strengths, builds self-esteem, and develops self-advocacy. Since then, Stratford Friends School, located in Newtown Square, PA, has been a leader and a pioneer in the education of children who learn differently. Our Quaker roots serve as a foundation for the school’s academic approach and culture. The Quaker values that we incorporate into our curriculum provide all children with the assurance that the way they learn matters, and that fairness requires that unique learners have equal access to diverse learning experiences.

Stratford Friends School’s students come from a diverse background of different ethnicity and geographic location across three counties in PA.  Our students are bight and motivated students with learning differences such as ADHD, dyslexia, receptive and expressive language delays, auditory processing issues, dyscalculia, executive function issues, or working memory deficits. These students fall behind in a traditional classroom setting and seek a learning environment where they are celebrated, understood, and can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Stratford Friends School serves grades K-9, with an average student to teacher ratio of 6:1, and an overall enrollment of 74 students (fall 2021).

Students with language-based learning differences often struggle with social and emotional skills, listening, and speaking.  At SFS we have a full-time school counselor and a full-time behavioral specialist available to support all our students.  We also have contracted services for OT, Language and Speech on campus to incorporate these services into our classroom routine.  Our small teacher to student ratio (6:1) allow our teachers to meet the individual needs of our students, making SFS a place where students develop friendships and find academic success.
