Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder...words that we seem to hear frequently, but maybe not fully understand what they mean. Simply put, Autism is a developmental disability, primarily characterized by difficulty with social interactions and communication barriers. Sometimes it also includes repetitive thoughts and actions. Since autism is a spectrum disorder, the adage, “If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism”, holds very true. The way it presents itself and the severity of the disability ranges from very mild and able to function day-to-day with little help, to incredibly severe complications requiring much assistance to accomplish even minor tasks. The rate of children diagnosed with autism has reached staggering numbers in recent years, with current studies showing that 1 in 44 will be diagnosed. Our main priority as the Autism Society of the Black Hills (ASBH) is to come alongside these families that have had their world turned upside down and offer support, education and advocacy.
