The Birchtree Center exists to promote independence, engaging relationships, and productive lives for children and youth with autism at home, at school, and in the community.

The Birchtree Center transforms the lives of children and youth with autism in northern New England. Since our nonprofit first opened its doors in 2002, the number of students with autism in our state has increased dramatically--today there are over six times as many students with autism in NH as there were in 2002.

Thirty-one public school districts and agencies in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts rely on Birchtree’s autism expertise. Our staff travels over 30,000 miles per year to serve students in their schools and family homes.

For students who need even more intensive support, Birchtree’s day school in Portsmouth is the only school in New Hampshire that serves students with autism exclusively. Students travel up to two hours per day every day to attend this year-round, individualized program. It's staffed by autism experts known for their ability to help students with significant behavioral and communication challenges. Many students are nonverbal or have only limited speech; some are also blind or physically disabled.
