Our curriculum is based on hands-on, play-based, and emergent learning.  The teachers plan activities in the classroom based on the needs and interests of their students, individually and as a group.  Lessons are theme based and incorporate developmental skills in math, literacy, fine motor, art exploration, building, dramatic play, and science/sensory. Classroom time is balanced between child-directed center time and teacher-directed group activities.  Teachers are engaged in continuing education throughout the year in order to provide their students with the very best practices in early child development.  In preparation for Kindergarten, students are introduced to letter recognition and handwriting skills through the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum and mathematic skills through Everyday Mathematics.

The Children’s Center supports and extends the learning in the classroom through enrichment programs:

Music and Movement
Our music program uses songs, rhythm, and Orff instruments to enhance and expand learning in the classroom. Body Rhythmics is designed to establish, within the child, a balanced and rhythmic coordination between body and mind through music and movement.
Gardening
Our playground features gardening beds that the children care for, both in the fall and spring. From seed to harvest, the children participate in all stages of care and always enjoy tasting the vegetables they grow.
The Children’s Center has a great deal of opportunities for parental support and involvement.  We firmly believe in supporting a connection between school and home and want parents to feel they have a continued role in their child’s education.  There are many optional volunteer opportunities at our school and we encourage parent participation.  Our school community is important to us and we hope families leave our school with life-long friends.
