Incorporated in 1956, The Humane Society of Hobart (HSH) is a 501c3 animal shelter holding municipal contracts with Hobart, Lake Station, and New Chicago, Indiana. In 2018, HSH answered the call from the community to save more lives, improve quality of care, and provide an inclusive, transparent, compassionate experience for adopters. HSH moved from a 67% live release rate in 2017 to an astounding 98.9% live release rate in 2019 and has maintained no-kill status since. HSH did so by completing an organizational health assessment, adhering to the Five Freedoms, providing medical services and vaccinations, working in partnership with area stakeholders, and adopting a compassionate mission to build and strengthen pet families. HSH recognizes the animal human bond as a means of reciprocating joy, stress relief, and health benefits for both the pet and the person. HSH values inclusivity, transparency, and a public facing approach to field services, and pet family services. The goal of HSH is to be a resource center for homeless pets, pet families, and our partnership community.

These are the programs we offer to support our communities and their pets:

Homeward Bound: Adoption Program
The Humane Society of Hobart builds pet families by providing homeless pets in need medical care, shelter, dietary nourishment, enrichment and training so that they may be placed for adoption into the homes of loving lifesavers. Our adoption fees include spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, medical removal of internal and external parasites (worms, fleas, and ticks), a microchip, and free health check. HSH practices an inclusive barrier free adoption process.

Hobart Animal Care & Control Field Services
The Humane Society of Hobart provides animal care and control field services for the towns of New Chicago, Indiana, Lake Station, Indiana, and Hobart, Indiana. HSH works along-side law enforcement partners to respond to animal cruelty and neglect complaints, animal at large complaints, lost pet notifications, and any community emergency where pets are involved.

H.O.P.E. Community Engagement Program (Helping Our Pets Effect)
HSH provides boots on the ground community engagement in the neighborhoods of Hobart, Lake Station, and New Chicago to share pet family resources and veterinary care, offer pet supplies and pet food, assist with networking opportunities for pet families, and facilitate trap/neuter release of feral and community cats. Vaccine clinics and microchipping clinics are regularly held in these communities.

HSH Pet Food Pantry
HSH will provide pet food supplies to pet families in need. Pet families in Lake County are welcome to arrange to pick up pet food at the shelter located at 2054 E. St. Rd. 130, Hobart, Indiana. HSH will also deliver to pet families who are homebound and unable to travel.

Cattin’ Around Town: Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release Program
HSH provides a service for feral and community cats to be spayed/neutered, a rabies vaccine, pain medication, ear tip identification, and then returned to the point of being trapped. TNVR reduces the stray cat population and feline cat euthanasia in shelters. TNVR offers a humane option for cats being cared for by community members and colony caretakers.

Together Forever: Emergency Assistance Program Keeping Pet Families Together
When families face difficult challenges and obstacles navigating life, sometimes suffering and hardship prevail. Pets suffer too in these situations and HSH has helped many families on an individual basis with temporary foster placement, emergency medical funding, rental deposits, boarding, and training.

Be A Lifesaver: Volunteer Program
With a small staff of 18 and an annual intake of 3,000 animals, HSH could never save as many lives as we do without our volunteer network. Volunteers are integrated throughout our organization. Foster families, dog walkers, special event and fundraising coordinators, cat specialists, maintenance geniuses, office assistants, and donors support pets and pet families in need. Our Jr. Lifesaver Program allows students under 18 to earn school service hours for graduation. There is a place for everyone to help in our organization. We are inclusive, transparent, and welcome all to join our mission.

Northwest Indiana Coalition of Animal Welfare Professionals
HSH operates a coalition of animal welfare professionals in Lake County to set a standard of best practices, reduce duplication of services, advocate for legislative changes to municipal code and law, network and provide transfer support to municipal agencies. Since 2018 HSH has transferred in thousands of pets from out of jurisdiction municipal agency partners across Lake County.
