Let me start with an introduction to our organization. On January 12, 2013, Dylan and Hayden Moan were born at only 23 weeks gestation... FOUR MONTHS early. They each weighed only about 1 pound and were facing a long NICU stay. A nurse suggested to their parents that they get a stuffed animal to take weekly photos with to help document their growth and progress. Their dad, Eric, went out to the store and came back with two Mrs. Potato Head toys. He thought they'd make a great toy for weekly photos because they are easily sanitized (so safer to use around their fragile infants) and every one knows the size of a Potato Head, which made it great for sharing photos with friends and family. The Potato Heads became so meaningful to Dylan and Hayden's parents that they began sending Potato Heads to other families dealing with life in the NICU with their preemies. Over the years the packages have grown to also include handmade leg warmers, hats and blankets from a dedicated group of volunteers, NICU comfort items (water bottles, lotion, chapstick, etc), pens for parents to journal and keep track of milestones, and more.
