The Psychological Center’s mission statement is “To empower people to reclaim their lives by providing substance abuse education & treatment, recovery support services, mental health counseling, safe shelter, and life skills for a future filled with promise.”

Established in 1971 The Psychological Center’s (TPC) programs have grown and adapted to meet the changing poverty and substance abuse treatment needs of New England including the current opiate crisis. TPC has a long history of coordinating with area agencies to provide a comprehensive array of services for clients. TPC collaboration with other agencies assures that services are not being duplicated and that the limited state funding is stretched in the wake of budget cuts.

The Psychological Center Programs

Daybreak Shelter is a 50 bed emergency transitional shelter for adult men and women, unaccompanied youth and the elderly. Daybreak is place of protection from the elements and the streets for many people experiencing homelessness. Daybreak Shelter offers triage advocacy to guests upon arrival to discern their financial, mental and medical condition and the best way to help each guest. Daybreak works closely with other social service organizations in the area to make sure each guest and getting the appropriate services and those efforts are not being duplicated. Example—if a veteran comes to the shelter he/she will be referred to Veteran’s Services so they may start getting their benefits. Additional advocacy includes medical, opiate addiction treatment housing and employment referrals. Breakfast and dinner and a hot shower with fresh linens and toiletries are available for each guest. The Shelter is open from 5:00pm to 8:00am on a first come, first served basis.

Pegasus House is a 15 bed, six month substance abuse treatment program for females 18-25 years of age. The women participate in group, family, and individual counseling and basic life skills throughout their treatment. They learn effective time management, problem solving, communication, and relationship skills as well as professional and organizational skills and financial literacy.  Multiple educational opportunities are available including GED, certificate programs and college classes. Additionally, the women are assisted in finding vocational opportunities and learn how to develop a resume. Case Management is given to assist the women clients in navigating through what can appear to be a complex and overwhelming process of setting up after care planning for continued support after graduation from the program.

Women’s View is a 15 bed, six month substance abuse treatment program for women above the age of 25. The program provides a stable, nurturing structure for the women to learn how to balance life issues with the added stressors of maintaining sobriety. Twenty-four seven support staff guides and encourages self-sufficiency and accountability for each woman. Case-management, therapy, in-house psycho-educational groups, and a peer-led Woman For Sobriety Group are offered, in addition to other recovery services.

Our programs assist clients in achieving individualized goals and focus on successful transitions from the programs. The continuum of care provides clients with many services including assistance obtaining food, housing, clothing, healthcare, life skills for a healthy future and community resources for aftercare planning. Our program structure and approach is to guide and support clients' progress through early recovery stages to independence and self-sufficiency.
