Teen cancer patients face some of the most complex and diverse treatment needs, yet receive the least amount of support of any patient population. Cancer treatment is expensive and so is college, and when you couple these together most teens have to forgo pursuing a college degree. The Ruth Cheatham Foundation (TRCF) is working to change this!
TRCF provides teen cancer survivors with access to education in the form of multi-year college scholarships! We target teens and families that have been disproportionately affected by their cancer diagnosis, and those receiving the highest level of scholarship support come from families with an annual income under $37,000. We are very proud to provide scholarship support, but it doesn’t end there.
TRCF believes that a holistic approach is best and we have data to back it up! Our scholars have treatment-related health realities that make learning difficult. In fact, chronically ill students, like those dealing with cancer, are 50% less likely to graduate from college. This is due to those treatment-related health realities like brain fog, and chronic fatigue, a depleted immune system. The good news is that these young scholars can in fact graduate from college with the appropriate tools and support. By providing every TRCF scholar with subject-specific online tutoring, peer-to-peer support, and career readiness workshops. These tools have helped TRCF scholars boast an over 95% graduation rate. These young people are full of grit and determination and they are succeeding! TRCF is helping survivors nationwide move past their diagnosis and on with their life.
To date, TRCF has awarded 647 college scholarships to deserving young cancer survivors in need and has provided over $2.3 million dollars in educational support, allowing survivors to excel now and throughout their life.
