“Not too many Dads would give up times with their buddies to take there son hunting before I could even fire a weapon without falling over…. also I hope I can let my kids someday experience as much of life as I have.” Shortly after writing that letter, Tommy Gilbert was killed in action in Iraq. Although he did not have any children of his, own, The Thomas M Gilbert Memorial Foundation (dba Sgt. Tommy’s Kids) has tried to honor his legacy by teaching America’s youth about fishing and the outdoors.

Sgt. Tommy’s Kids main event every year is the Sgt Tommy’s Kids Fishing Day where we host 350-400 kids to a day of fishing, crafts, and outdoor games. Each child receives their own fishing pole and tackle box to take home- so they hopefully continue to enjoy nature all summer. Any leftover funds are then used to further promote youth appreciation of the outdoors – such as sponsoring high school Fishing Clubs or youth outdoor education classes.
