Mission:
Our mission at transcenDANCE is to provide equitable access to dance and performance, and holistic
wraparound services, for young people from marginalized communities. We support youth as they
transcend barriers, recognize their own potential and power, and create positive change for themselves,
their families, and their communities.
Vision:
We envision communities that center youth voice and creative expression in building healthy, vibrant,
and equitable environments where everyone can thrive.
Program Framework:
transcenDANCE offers a three-tiered program model: CONNECT, CREATE, CONTRIBUTE.
transcenDANCE CONNECTS to youth and communities through in-school and out-of-school time dance
classes, artist-in-residency programs, community arts work in public spaces, and outreach
performances.
CREATE is the heart of the transcenDANCE programs. Through the CREATE Performance Group, youth
ages 9-18 years explore dance and the performing arts after school and on weekends. They engage in
rigorous dance training, are immersed in a social change and social emotional learning curriculum, and
have access to holistic wraparound services including mental health support, academic support, and
mentorship. Their work during the school year culminates in an annual performance on a professional
San Diego stage.
CREATE Summer Camps offer robust and intensive programming for youth to be engaged and channel
their energy through a variety of artistic disciplines, while providing meals and mental/emotional health
support.
transcenDANCE alumni CONTRIBUTE through performances, teaching and choreography assistantships
and paid roles, and mentoring of incoming students. Wellness support and college scholarships for
graduates and alumni ensure transcenDANCE continues to be a resource for the students as they
transition into young adult responsibilities.
