HISTORY AND SERVICES

Turning Point has been providing substance use disorder treatment beginning with a 10-bed residential program for men in 1975.  Since that time, Turning Point has treated nearly 50,000 clients. Over the years, Turning Point has responded to the increasing and complex needs of clients by expanding our program to offer services to women, clients with co-occurring disorders, clients who are leaving the criminal justice system, those who are involved with the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP), clients diverted to treatment rather than incarceration through the statewide drug court system, clients using medication assisted treatment and most recently to clients whose medical or psychiatric conditions require more enhanced medical supervision. Throughout its history, Turning Point has expanded and improved its facilities and broadened its services with new levels of care.

In 2010, Turning Point made a significant purchase of property that enabled all residential programs, administrative and admissions staff to be consolidated at one site. This beautiful, completely renovated, state-of-the-art facility, located at the former Barnert Hospital, now the Barnert Medical Arts Complex, in Paterson, NJ, houses four programs totaling 144 beds; (25) Sub-Acute Detoxification, (23) Women's Short-Term Residential (12) women’s long-term residential and (36) Male Short-Term residential, and (48) male long-term residential. In 2014, Turning Point acquired Anderson House (female halfway house program with 15 beds) and two female transitional housing facilities accommodating 13 clients. In addition to residential treatment services, Turning Point operates outpatient treatment programs in Paterson. In May 2021, we opened an adolescent day treatment program in Pompton Plains, NJ.

Turning Point is an approved provider in the co-occurring disorders network, the medication assisted treatment initiative (MATI) (enhanced detox and short-term residential treatment) as well as the Driving Under the Influence Initiative (DUII), South Jersey Initiative (SJI), Drug Court Initiative (DCI) and Work First Substance Abuse Initiative (SAI). On average, Turning Point treats over 3500 clients in our residential and outpatient treatment programs each year.
