We are an educational outreach program that focuses on sharing both broad agricultural and natural resources knowledge and Desert Research and Extension Center research with the public in an enjoyable and uplifting way, leading to increased public awareness of how agriculture and natural resources affect our daily lives.
We offer a K-12 program with a hands on learning approach and an opportunity for students to take a hay ride to our 4 acre garden to pick their own vegetables. We currently reach approximately 8,000 students locally with this program. Farm Smart depends on donations to provide supplies for our K-12 program and to keep the cost affordable for local schools.
In addition, we reach over 2500 individuals in our Winter Visitor program in January and February. The Winter Visitor Program includes a tour of the farm with explanations of the Imperial Valley’s water delivery, a visit to the vegetable garden to harvest, and a conference room presentation including information on local agriculture practices and products and current research taking place at the Desert Research and Extension Center.
