United Way’s work focuses on three key strategies that create opportunities for everyone in our communities to live a better life: United Way is helping to meet the basic needs of our community’s most vulnerable people, giving every Canadian the opportunity to realize a better future; United Way is giving children and youth the support they need to get a great start in life, do well in school, and reach their full potential; United Way is creating vibrant neighbourhoods, where everyone experiences a sense of belonging and connection to one another.
Our objective is to reduce to the greatest extent possible those barriers to employment and educational advancement which are faced by those in marginalized and less advantaged communities. It is a broad spectrum wrap around approach to enhancing individual capacity. When we enhance individual capacity we expand opportunities for marginalized individuals to develop self reliance which is the cornerstone of a more prosperous community for all in the 21st Century. Many of the participants in this program area were inordinately adversely impacted by the effects of the COVID pandemic. In person learning suffered. Many of this population lacked either, or both the equipment to participate virtually, or the skills. We're now going through a return to in person capability. The emphasis here ranges from basic literacy and numeracy skill development and/or acquisition to digital literacy and capability.
