The Violet Project is a non-profit organization run by Johns Hopkins Medicine to increase access to sexual and reproductive health services and education for low-income adolescents and young adults in Maryland. We have a functional website with educational videos on a variety of topics including menstrual hygiene, HIV prevention, and building healthy relationships. The website also has a free online store for young people with financial need; they can order menstrual hygiene products (including pads, tampons, period underwear, and menstrual cups), condoms, and self-collect STI test kits for free.

We also distribute these products and educational materials to low-income young people who are seen in our clinics throughout Baltimore. Our telehealth services aim to remove the barrier to transportation for youth, but a lot of youth have been utilizing our anonymous hotline to ask questions that can only be answered by seeing a doctor in clinic. In 2019, 80% of Baltimore City public school students qualified for free or reduced-price meals based on financial need, putting them at or below the poverty line. We hope to further increase access to healthcare in clinic by partnering with Uber to provide free rides for young people with financial need, so that they may be seen for free by our dedicated providers throughout Johns Hopkins GYN/OB and Adolescent Medicine.

We hope to support adolescents who may not have access to transportation or parental support in taking charge of their health, including preventative care and treatment. Adolescence is a critical period in which adverse reproductive health outcomes can have long-lasting effects, so we hope to remove as many barriers as possible from these youth so that they may access care.
