Far beyond a “swim and gym” facility, the YMCA provides services across 418 sites in King, South Snohomish, and Pierce Counties. Last year, their mission of building a community where all people, especially the young, are encouraged to develop their fullest potential, delivered, among many other accomplishments:
· 3,041 who people received mental health support, including increased mental health counselors who identify as BIPoC or LGBTQI+ to 45%.
· 1,933 young people who accessed employment, education, and violence prevention services.
· 1,456 young people (up 61% over 2020) who found support in finding housing or preventing eviction.
· 5,000 children, young adults, and families who were welcomed to Seattle with food and mental health resources through the YMCA’s New American Welcome Center.
· 3,000 people who were given health services tailored to their culture and language, including Covid-19 vaccines, cancer screening and more.
· And perhaps my favorite fun stat, a series of summer hockey camps, produced in partnership with the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, introduced more than 80 BIPoC youth to the game, a tiny part of their broader dedication to removing institutional and systemic barriers that result in oppression and racism.
Their Vision 2025 seeks to drive progress in promoting a culture free from bias and in justice through their Center Equity & Justice for all; attending to whole person health for all; driving systems change to build equitable systems; and recovering strategically & equitably.
But they can’t do it without the community’s support. That’s where you come in.
