My niece, Bailey, was three years old when she felt the “bite” of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease (CMT). First, we noticed her feet turning inward. Not long after, she began falling several times a day while walking and, eventually she was dropping to the ground without warning because her ankles couldn’t support her.

Bailey got her first pair of ankle-foot orthosis (braces) when she was four. She still wears them every day and, now at the age of 11, she takes daily medication to help manage the constant nerve pain in her legs and wrists. My niece is just one of the millions of people worldwide who suffer from CMT, and these are just some of the symptoms they have to
deal with.
