Description

The event "Afternoon Out for Literacy" will be held on April 27, 2024. It is the 12th annual fundraiser for the Broadway Christian Church Summer Reading Program. It will be a raffle, auction and light meal to help raise funds for this summers session. The hours are from 1-4 pm. There is no admission price. You can come anytime during these hours to place your tickets for the raffles and make your bids. Winners will be announced at 4:00 pm and you do not have to be present to win. All winners not present will be called to arrange for pick up of prizes.

The Summer Reading Program at Broadway Christian Church has for the past 46 years provided free one-on-one tutoring for academically at risk children in the neighborhood of Slavic Village in Cleveland Ohio. The children and families we work with are inner city, low income families that attend city schools that are failing.  There are few options open to these families, let alone affordable options for remediation during the summer. As a result we need to raise $7,000 for the upcoming summer session. These funds will provide scholarships for students to receive an hour of one-on-one tutoring each day for 5 weeks, free of charge. It will also provide a half hour of computer classes as well as an hour of art classes each day. The money raised for the scholarships further helps the community as it helps pay stipends for our tutors, who are teens  with the potential of being tomorrow’s leaders and advocates for children, literacy and positive change. The money raised also allows us to send each student back to school with all the school supplies they need for the upcoming year.
