For the past 46 years, The Broadway Christian Church Summer Reading Program has provided quality one-on-one tutoring for academically and economically at-risk children in the inner city. The Summer Reading Program is a non-religious outreach project of the Broadway Christian Church, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that is devoted to making a difference in the community.

The children and families we work with are inner-city, low-income families that attend Ohio’s Cleveland Municipal Schools. Unfortunately, these schools are failing. A failing school system, disruptions in the past due to COVID, along with statistics that suggest that students living in poverty generally regress in academics over the summer months, gives evidence of a desperate need for intervention.

During the 5-weeks of our program, each child receives daily one hour of one-on-one tutoring, an additional hour of art and a half hour of computer lessons. Lesson plans are drawn up by professional educators including an Intervention Specialist. The program uses teens from the same neighborhood to administer the lesson plans and help with the art and computer instruction.

Our primary goal is to work with these children, offering intense remediation especially in reading, and to provide all our services free of charge. Our second goal is Youth Development which we meet by hiring the teens and training them to work in our program.
