Description

After a 2-year wait, we are excited to finally get back to Central Appalachia this summer! We hope you will join us in helping families in need to have homes that are warmer, safer, and drier.  We have been so grateful for your past support for Westborough ASP Youth Group.

For over 30 years, ASP has sent volunteers to repair and rebuild homes for low-income families in rural Appalachia. They fix roofs, flooring, insulation, or plumbing; they build stairs, dig ditches, and do anything else that is asked of them in order to make homes warmer, safer and drier. All projects are done at no charge to the recipients.

In an area where poverty is double the national average, many families struggle with day-to-day expenses. Home repairs are put off, year after year. Tens of thousands of these homes are substandard-- many without adequate kitchens or even plumbing. These proud, hard-working families don’t ask for much, but they deserve to live in a home that is safe, dry and warm.

For 2020-21, volunteers could not travel to Appalachia for the first time in 30 years. We still made a difference to families in need; in Appalachia from afar, and locally. Last summer, 75 volunteers did repairs, built ramps, and made needed improvements for local families. We also collected tens of thousands of pounds of food for the local Food Pantry.

If you are in the position to help, we humbly ask for your support this year so our youth can give hope to communities struggling from the effects of profound poverty and substandard housing. Will you help send 75 energetic and amazing volunteers, 60 of them teens and young adults. to Appalachia this summer to help improve the lives of families in need?

We have many fundraisers, but our annual “Friends of ASP Auction” is one of the most important community fundraisers where you stand out as a supporter of our community’s youth! The event will be a week-long Silent Auction held online in May, with the finale lining up with our Weekend Prep Retreat. We must raise over $50,000 to pay for all the building materials, food and lodging at a local school, and transportation costs, for our 9-day trip to Appalachia.

ASP is more than a just building program. Youth interact with the family they're assigned to serve, forging relationships and friendships that impact them for the rest of their lives. Lessons learned about compassion and service that enrich faith and build character are brought home to enrich our own local communities.  Though you surely get many requests for donations; please know that your generous support for the Westborough ASP Youth Group not only helps families in need, but is an investment in the energy and compassion of our local young people. Their renewed passion for service transforms the youth and likewise benefits our own communities.

We hope you will participate in our auction to support our youth’s efforts to help families. Thank you.
