Description

Sunshine Cottage for Deaf Children is a non-profit school helping to empower families, children, and students who are deaf or hard of hearing to learn to listen and speak using their own voice. Our 4th annual Noche del Sol fiesta-themed gala, on April 4, 2024, features a live and silent auction, raffle, games, and entertainment, with all proceeds directly benefitting children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Please consider donating to our 400-person event at the San Antonio Botanical Garden to help us raise $400k this year. We appreciate you!

Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children promotes early identification and intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing and helps them develop their maximum potential through listening, spoken language and literacy.

Upon discovery of their daughter’s hearing loss, John H. and Dela White established our school in 1947 to help her and other children who are deaf or hard of hearing learn to listen and speak. From the humble beginnings of seven students, Sunshine Cottage has grown to be one of the world’s most renowned centers for hearing and speech serving over 600 children in 2023.

Core Programs

Our core programs are designed to encourage, guide, and educate in support of the development of listening and language skills.

Newborn Hearing Evaluation Center: Children aged birth through 5 years receive comprehensive diagnostic hearing evaluations following pediatrician referrals.

Parent-Infant Program: This parent-focused, child-driven program is dedicated to counseling parents about hearing loss and advocacy.

Early Childhood and Elementary School: Preschool through 5th-grade children receive a language-based education.

Sunshine Cottage is also a source of educational resources for other professionals and educators around the world. Resources available include curriculums, webinars, and educational kits.

We are fortunate to have so many donors and foundations support our school to help children learn to listen and speak using their voice without the use of visual modalities, such as sign language. Thank you for considering to help us push forward our missin.
