Description

Friends of Bonham Academy’s (FBA) mission is to bring together neighborhood and community partners to enhance educational opportunities for the students and teachers of James Butler Bonham Academy. The 501c3 nonprofit organization helps bridge gaps in the resources available to Bonham students and teachers by providing project support through the FBA Grant Program for on-campus learning and enrichment. All of the funds raised by FBA is invested directly back into the school, without fees paid to another national organizing entity or having to be spread across multiple campuses in its school district. FBA’s Grant Program awards funding to Bonham educators seeking to inspire learning in their students, providing them with opportunities to augment classroom resources, introduce new technology, and build on their students’ future academic success.

Located in the heart of the King William historic district since 1889, James Butler Bonham Academy serves more than 600 students in San Antonio Independent School District from kindergarten through 8th grade, with 65% of these students qualifying as economically disadvantaged and 90% being Hispanic. Recognized for its renowned language arts curriculum and outstanding commitment to the fine arts and environmental sciences, the public charter school boasts a holistic approach to education in a public school that still maintains a strong sense of community. After Bonham Academy achieved its status as an in-district charter school in 2007, parents and community members identified two goals: first, to build neighborhood support for the school while integrating the school with its revitalizing Southtown neighborhood, and second, to raise funds to help the school achieve the high standards set forth in the charter. In 2009, FBA was launched as a means to meet those goals. The school has since achieved its recharting and is also now part of the UTSA Network of Dual Language Schools.
