Description

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office is embarking on a new path to improve physical and mental health. The life of being a law enforcement officer has not been easy these past few years, it has taken a noticable toll on our men and women who work tirelessly everyday to protect our county.  In 2021 alone, nearly 60,000, officers were assaulted, 62 murdered, 301 died from Covid-19 related health issues, 58 died in traffic related incidents and 25 died in the line of duty related to health related issues.  We want to improve our Agency's over all health as we cherish each deputy.

Our agency will participate in a number of team building challenges that will increase activity, nutrition and overall wellness.  To make this voyage fun we have invited Spotsylvania County Fire Rescue to participate.  Our challenge will begin the 2nd week of October, the first stage will last for 6 weeks.  Each participate will be part of a team of 10.  The teams will need to complete daily physical, mental and nutritional goals to move ahead.  Each participate who completes their daily challenges will earn a raffle ticket, potentially giving each person 7 chances to win a weekly prize.  At the conclusion of the first 6 weeks an award will be presented to the top scoring team and the top scoring individual.  The goal is to continue this over the course of six months to one year with a fantastic incentive at the end to work towards.

In addition to incentives, we are working on improving our onsite gym and providing services to our deputies. We would like to offer classes, such as yoga for first responders, strength building and nutritional classes.  Unfortunately we do not have a budget for these services.

The prizes are a great incentive to this challenge but the overall outcome of improved physical and mental health, not to mention morale, is the true winner.
