Description

Did you know that National Endowment for the Arts research shows that dancers make the lowest median annual earnings of any arts discipline they studied? It is also the artform with the highest percentage of workers who identify as female - 77.4%, and has the highest percentage of non-white or Hispanic workers at 44.1%. Also, though women make up the majority of the dance workforce, men still outnumber women in artistic leadership and choreographer roles around the world.

Did you also know that though California ranks as one of the top 3 most expensive states to live in, and has one of the highest concentrations of jobs in dance, it does not rank among the top paying states for dancers, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics?

Each year, approximately one third of MashUp Contemporary Dance Company's overall annual budget goes directly to paying women artists. Our annual summer fundraising campaign, running July through National Women’s Equality Day on August 26, is meant to raise awareness of the need for better support for dance as a whole, as well as to raise crucial funds so that MashUp can uplift AND pay women artists well.

Funds raised will directly support MashUp's 7 core programs, which each year provide paid artistic opportunities for 30-40 women artists, amplify work from 20-30 diverse women choreographers by presenting it to a broad LA audience, offer resources, professional development, mentorship, and training to over 100 early and mid-career dance professionals, and facilitate dialogue on key societal issues, especially pertaining to gender.
