For more than a century, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been helping change kids’ perspectives and giving them the opportunity to reach their potential. Our organization seeks to change the lives of children between 6 and 18 years of age that are facing adversity for the better, forever. Our unique brand of one-to-one mentoring has a BIG impact by helping children achieve success in school, helps them avoid risky behaviors such as getting into fights, trying drugs and alcohol and improves their self-confidence. Our caring role models help to nurture children, strengthen communities and expand the world in new ways.
Oklahoma has the highest rate of incarceration leaving 1 in 7 children with a parent in prison at some point in their childhood. This trauma can disrupt brain development causing social, emotional and cognitive problems throughout an individual’s life. The single most important factor for a child to develop resiliency is having at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult.
