Cahoots Theatre was founded in 1986 by Beverly Yhap, and for three and a half decades has held the distinction of being the first professional theatre company in Canada with a mandate dedicated to cultural diversity. Our commitment, from our inception, has been to the presentation of racially inclusive work. Now known as the theatrical home for artists from the edge, we aim to be a haven for the creativity of the 'outsider' - those who live beyond the boundaries of Eurocentricity and whiteness, heterosexuality, cisgender, able-bodiedness or any combination of the above. The artists we work with know the feeling of being "the only one" in the room.

In recent years Cahoots has expanded its mission and now supports, develops and present the voice of all marginalized creators, which has materialized in collaborations with Indigenous, POC, Deaf, Disabled, Blind, neuroatypical, and queer artists. These artists often have the most compelling stories to tell, but the least opportunity to take centre stage.

We believe that all stories are relevant and the sharing of them enlighten and benefit society as a whole. If we are to be truly faithful to our mandate, then we must also consider the story of those with the least access to the art. By creating avenues of artistic expression and connecting artists with communities, we encourage artistic attendance, add to the value of living in Toronto and contribute to the endurance of culturally diverse theatre overall.
