The Friends met in May 2016 to organize itself, led by the group’s founding president, Mary Savage. On June 23, 2016, members adopted a set of by-laws and a board of officers formed. The group incorporated in early July 2016, and received its tax-exempt 501(c) (3) status from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service later the same month. The first issue of its monthly newsletter, the Friends Folio, came out Aug. 1, 2016.
Mission Statement: The Friends mission is to encourage, foster, and assist Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas programs and activities by volunteering, fundraising, and promoting community interest in the museum.
The purpose of this organization shall be to bring together people with cultural and philanthropic interests. The primary purpose of the Friends will be to assist in fundraising projects for the future of the NSMLV. The Friends will encourage, foster, and assist in NSMLV programs and activities.
The Friends will promote community interest in the NSMLV. We will not engage in political or legislative activities designed to affect the outcome of any primary, general, or special election or question. The Corporation shall operate as a nonprofit organization (IRS code 501c3 and no part of the assets or earnings shall be used for the benefit of any one person as long as the Corporation shall exists.
Our fundraising therefore primarily supports Educational Programming (ex. "Museum in a Box" that is delivered free to requesting Clark County Schools, Discovery Saturdays for children and adults, monthly speakers, UNLV and high school internships etc.), community outreach (ex. Dia de los Muertos, hands on classes, materials for Curator visits, etc.), Exhibitions (ex. Paul R. Williams, Liberace, Old Spanish Trail), Events (ex. Dino Day, Fossil Factory) etc.
We provide our sponsors with one year of advertising on our Website, Facebook, monthly newsletters, and on our TV monitor inside the Museum lobby. For large donations we meet one on one with interested parties to design a mutually beneficial package.
