MISSION
Gateway Foundation is a national, non-profit organization committed to reducing substance abuse
and co-occurring mental health problems through effective and efficient treatment programs.

NEED
The leading cause of death for Americans under 50 today is overdose. Effective treatment of
substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring mental health challenges saves lives. The New
York Times has dubbed the COVID-19 pandemic a “national relapse trigger”. Over 100,000 deaths
were related to drug overdose between April 2020 - April 2021 according to preliminary data from the
CDC. It is the highest number of deaths ever recorded in a 12-month period. Uncertain times
combined with social isolation have taken an immense toll on people with substance use disorders,
making reinforcement and investment in behavioral health treatment one of the utmost public health
concerns.

IMPACT
The leading cause of death for Americans under 50 today is overdose. In 2021, Gateway served over
15,000 clients in over 16 Illinois communities, another 2,300 via its gateway connect virtual recovery
community, and thousands more across the country through its corrections division. Effective
treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health challenges saves lives
