The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia is a tax-exempt trusted public charity that helps grow philanthropy to respond to need, seed innovation and lead and convene the community. Individuals, families, businesses, and organizations establish charitable funds for grantmaking and social investment at the Community Foundation.In turn, the Community Foundation invests and administers these funds and partners with its donors and other leaders to invest in the region and provide input on some of the most complex civic and social challenges we face.
In 2021 the Community Foundation awarded more than $6.5 million in grants and scholarships and now reports $89 million in managed philanthropic assets. Our philanthropy offers a positive impact within the Northern Virginia community and beyond.
As an example of the Community Foundation’s recent impact in our community, it awarded more than $2.4 million in response to the pandemic – not only to support the emergency needs of those disproportionately impacted by the virus, but also to address some of the underlying and systemic inequities the virus laid bare and to catalyze more inclusive systems of economic growth in Northern Virginia.
