In partnership with Goochland County, we promote animal welfare through financial support, innovative programs and community engagement. In 2016, GPL entered a public/private partnership with Goochland County to provide additional funding, beyond the County’s budget, to add an adoption wing onto the newly constructed animal shelter. The new state-of-the-art facility opened in June 2020 providing 14,000 square feet of space for optimal care of all animals who enter.

Once the capital campaign was complete, GPL changed its focus to the animals in the shelter. The new facility includes a spay & neuter clinic where eligible adoptable animals are altered prior to adoption and provided vaccinations and a microchip.  GPL’s ongoing program which supports the Goochland County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is the Dr. Lori L. Elliott Medical Fund, which was established in 2019. This fund supplements the County’s budget and pays for all treatments except for rabies shots which are covered by the minimal adoption fee collected by the County.

GPL has since expanded into the community with the Good Neighbor Fund (GNF), which launched in February 2021.  GNF provides free clinics to low-income neighbors who cannot afford preventive pet care. Once animals are seen and up-to-date on vaccines, animals are scheduled for spay/neuter procedures and paid for by the Good Neighbor Fund. The GNF also provides microchips and County dog licenses.
