Guided by our mission to assure the safety and resiliency of children by strengthening families and their communities, Home Start, Inc., a non-profit child abuse prevention and treatment agency, has strengthened and developed San Diego’s families, communities, and systems of care since 1972.
To effectively prevent and treat child abuse, Home Start addresses the conditions that can contribute to risky or abusive situations – poverty, unsafe neighborhoods, lack of affordable housing, and unemployment – while concurrently addressing individual self-sufficiency and emotional needs.
Home Start has over 10 multi-unit properties throughout San Diego County providing permanent, temporary, and emergency housing throughout San Diego Counties. After those we serve move into the home, we offer "wraparound support" - meaning parenting classes, behavioral health interventions, child development instruction, tax relief, as well as skill-building and job-training. Home Start also has two social enterprises - our Bright Futures Candles and Home Start Thrift Boutique. Both of these ventures are entirely run and staffed by our clients, providing real-world experience in the professional world.
