The Eye Foundation of Canada (EFC) is committed to its mission to “promote the preservation, enhancement, and restoration of sight through innovative research, advanced education, and improvement of patient care.” In fact, for over 30 years now, the EFC has provided a unique and educational experience for medical students who wish to pursue careers in Ophthalmology, while improving patient care through research.

Through its Summer Scholarship Program, started in 1991, the EFC awards scholarships to outstanding Canadian medical students to encourage them to pursue a career in ophthalmology. EFC Graduates have become prominent in the ophthalmic community. Over the past 10 years alone, the EFC has helped 20 students enter advanced training to become eye surgeons, and in turn, many have also become mentors to other EFC Summer Scholarship recipients. In 2022, we congratulated two more scholars on completion of the Summer Scholarship Program (among over 50 other prior scholarship recipients). Research is unravelling significant progress into eye care and diseases:

·       Studies involving the Toronto Portable Perimeter continue to ensure more accurate diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma and neurologic disorders.
·       Studies on ophthalmic viscosurgical devices improve surgical safety.
·       Research in ocular antibiotics has dramatically reduced the risk of surgical infections.

The continued success of EFC has been possible through funding from regular sponsors and donors, from community “sight” events, Skate for Sight (Skate Night) that raise awareness of eye care and help support research, and from its annual fundraiser: Thanks for My Sight Night (Sight Night).
