A 70-year-old woman who lost her high school love, a family whose apartment was victim of a fire, and parents who have lost their child to suicide. It was at these moments, when community members fell into their darkest hour with an unexpected tragedy in their lives. These individuals were all clients of TIP as a volunteer arrived by their side when all hope was lost.
Trauma Intervention Programs (TIP) is a non-profit organization established in 1985 to provide emotional and practical support to citizens in crisis immediately following a tragic event. Trained citizens in the community volunteer to provide care and support to these residents. Emergency responders request TIP volunteers through the 911 emergency response system; TIP volunteers are available 24 hours a day and respond to 100% of requests, arriving on scene within an average of 20 minutes.
TIP volunteers assist with relief to the emergency responders on scene who are unable to stay with victims and ensure their emotional well-being. This allows emergency responders to return to service sooner; lifting emotional burden many of them feel when leaving a victims in distress. This also prevents a “second injury” to the individuals whom are in a state of emotional shock. A “second injury” occurs when individuals perceive the “system” as causing more grief and pain (even though unintentional) most often by being left alone with unanswered questions.
TIP volunteers consist of individuals of all ages in our communities and responds to a variety of tragedies such as unexpected deaths, homicides, and community disasters. It is too often when citizens are alone when in a state of shock and dismay following a sudden tragedy. TIP volunteers arrive on scene to provide a void and offer emotional comfort, knowledge, referrals and support during some of the worst moments of one’s life. The TIP mission is simple yet the work, which is done by volunteers, is as precise and complex as each individual family system.
