The New England Chapter of Cure SMA covers Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. (The Cure SMA national office is based in the Chicago area.) Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a degenerative disease that affects the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, affecting the patient's ability to sit up, crawl, walk, and even eat and breathe. Cure SMA leads the way to a world without SMA, the number one genetic cause of death for infants. They fund and direct comprehensive research that drives breakthroughs in treatment and care, and they provide families the support they need for today.
