Fred Torres was a mainstay in the running community. A runner himself, Fred donated countless hours to mentoring young athletes, supporting running events throughout the area, and officiating high school athletics. On January 20, 2014 Fred suffered a heart attack while jogging with fellow colleagues at an annual seminar for race-timers. A scholarship was created in his name to continue his passion for supporting our young athletes and the running community. The Fred Torres Memorial Scholarship is presented each year to outstanding graduating student-athletes of the Clifton High School (NJ) Cross County and Track & Field Teams. Beginning in 2017, the Memorial Fund will also support the Clifton Young Mustangs Summer Track Camp, an instructional youth track and field camp held at CHS Stadium in July. 100% of the race proceeds will go to the Fred Torres Memorial Fund and the Fred Torres Memorial Scholarships.
